BAMBOO MOUNTAIN

History & Heritage of Bamboo Mountain

Bamboo Mountain is one of those iconic places that tell the story of Mauritius through its landscapes, forgotten trails, and breathtaking views. Located in the south of the island, this mountain, much less well-known than Le Morne Brabant, is nevertheless a true natural and heritage treasure, offering a timeless escape for those who dare to explore it.

Once a hunting and farming area, the slopes of Montagne Bambous have seen the seasons and generations pass by, preserving the silent traces of the ancient paths taken by the inhabitants of the surrounding villages. Even today, one can still come across the remains of stone walls, fallow crops, and old fruit trees, marking the human footprint in this wild landscape.

The mountain itself, rising to about 500 meters above sea level, offers an exceptional panorama of the southern plains, the sparkling lagoons of Bel Ombre, and the distant majesty of Le Morne. It is a privileged vantage point for understanding the close bond between Mauritian man and his land: an island shaped by nature, but also by those who have lived, cultivated, and protected it.

The atmosphere is both authentic and peaceful, marked by the song of endemic birds, the scents of the tropical forest, and the stories that one imagines at the bend of a path. Some Mauritian families still remember having walked these slopes, to reach a field, a river or simply to enjoy a breathtaking view of their native island.

Today, Bamboo Mountain has become a refuge for lovers of heritage hikesIt embodies this desire to rediscover a living heritage, to walk in the footsteps of those who made local history, and to preserve an ecosystem rich in biodiversity.

This place is also a source of inspiration for artists, photographers and storytellers, as its raw beauty evokes a real Mauritius, far from tourist clichés.

Each climb is thus an immersion in the natural and cultural heritage of Mauritius : we come for the effort, we stay for the beauty, and we leave with memories engraved in our hearts.
