Facing the vastness of the Indian Ocean, enjoy a wild and authentic setting, where Mauritian nature is revealed in all its splendor.
History & Heritage of Flat Island (Northern Islands)
Flat Island is one of the emblematic islands of the North of Mauritius, located off the coast of Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux. Larger than its neighbors, it covers approximately 253 hectares and seduces as much by its wild landscapes as by its the richness of its pastLong a landmark for sailors, it is today a site where nature, history and heritage intertwine.
Its name comes from its unique morphology: a relatively flat island, contrasting with the surrounding volcanic reliefs. But beyond its geography, it is above all its cultural and maritime heritage that makes it a unique place. There you will find a historic lighthouse dating from the 19th century, erected in 1855 to guide ships in this area then feared by sailors because of its coral reefs.
Flat Island has also had a history marked by health and the sea. During the colonial era, it served as a quarantine station for ship passengers, particularly during cholera and smallpox epidemics. Hospital ruins and remains of administrative buildings still bear witness to this little-known past, when the island played an essential role in the health protection of Mauritius.
The natural heritage is equally remarkable: pristine beaches, a turquoise lagoon and abundant coral reefs. A refuge for numerous seabirds and a privileged site for observing biodiversity, the island is a fragile ecosystem and precious. The balance between tourism and conservation is fundamental here to preserve this wealth.
Today, visiting Flat Island means taking a journey through time : between the ruins steeped in history, the old lighthouse dominating the horizon, and the raw beauty of a still-preserved island. We feel both the weight of the past and the lightness of moments spent facing the immensity of the Indian Ocean.
Flat Island is therefore not just a beach destination: it is a real living page of Mauritian heritage, where we discover the soul of the island through its history, its nature and its cultural heritage.
North Island Excursion: Your itinerary in detail
Your adventure begins from Grand Bay, the ideal starting point for exploring the marine gems of northern Mauritius. Aboard a catamaran or speedboat, you leave the shore and head towards a lagoon with a thousand blue reflections.
After a short sail, head for the Gunner's Quoin, an impressive basalt cliff rising from the ocean. This is an opportunity to admire the seabirds nesting on its walls and to enjoy a first snorkeling stop to discover the seabed.
Then you will continue towards Flat Island, the largest of the northern islands. Its historic lighthouse and quarantine ruins bear witness to a rich past, while its pristine beaches invite you to relax and swim in crystal-clear waters.
Right next door is Gabriel Islet, a small wild paradise with fine sand and unspoiled vegetation. Here, you will enjoy a barbecue lunch served by the beach, in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, typically Mauritian.
Depending on the itinerary, a stop may also be planned near the coral reefs for a new snorkeling session, to meet the multicolored tropical fish.
At the end of the day, the boat gently sets off back towards Grand Baie. On deck, the gaze is lost between the infinite horizon and the silhouettes of the northern islands which recede, giving way to a unforgettable memory of escape and discovery.
Snorkeling at Île Plate: an immersion in the heart of marine life
Leave from Grand Bay or Cap Malheureux For an unforgettable day in the crystal-clear waters of northern Mauritius. Aboard a comfortable boat, head to Flat Island, a true marine sanctuary. There, your local guide will take you to the best snorkeling spots, renowned for their rich underwater flora and fauna.
Equip yourself with a mask and snorkel, and dive into a fascinating universe: coral reefs, brain corals, colorful gorgonians, parrotfish, butterfly fish, blue surgeons, but also benches of silver trevally and twirling young ladies. With a little luck, you will come across a hawksbill turtle or a stingray gliding gracefully across the sand.
Beyond the beauty of the corals, Flat Island is also a refuge for many seabirds that you can observe from the beach, adding a natural dimension to your excursion.
