History & Heritage of Lion Mountain
Visit Lion Mountain is one of the hidden gems of the southeast coast of Mauritius. Located near the village of Vieux Grand Port, it stands out for its majestic silhouette reminiscent of a reclining lion, watching over the lagoon and surrounding bay. Rising to over 480 meters above sea level, this iconic mountain attracts hikers and history buffs with its unspoiled natural setting and rich cultural heritage.
Its evocative and symbolic name originates from the shape of the peak that proudly dominates the region. But Lion Mountain is not only a spectacular natural setting: it is also a place of remembrance. Close to the historic site of Vieux Grand Port – the first landing point for Dutch settlers in the 17th century – it has witnessed major episodes in Mauritian history, including the famous naval Battle of Grand Port in 1810, the only French victory against the British in the Indian Ocean.
Once a natural refuge for the region's inhabitants and fishermen, the mountain still bears traces of its maritime and colonial past. Its slopes are home to native vegetation and remains linked to ancient communication routes. Walking along it, you'll encounter the living history of Mauritius, between the memory of the first settlers, Creole traditions, and the imprint of wild nature.
Today, Lion Mountain embodies a natural and cultural heritage unique, where spirituality, authenticity and local legends blend together. It offers a striking contrast to the hustle and bustle of modern life: here, there are no roads, no invasive buildings, only silence, nature and a timeless atmosphere.
Hikers discover exceptional panoramas: the turquoise lagoon of Mahébourg, the surrounding islets, as well as the impressive Lion Mountain Range. It is even said that some mornings, at sunrise, the summit takes on an even more mystical appearance, as if the stone animal comes back to life.
True heritage symbol, Lion Mountain is also a meeting point between past and present: songs, stories, Creole picnics and children's laughter still resonate there, in a grandiose setting marked by the history of an entire people.
