The La Preneuse cannon: a relic steeped in history

Its name comes from the French frigate The Taker, a 44-gun warship which, in 1799, fought a battle against the British navy off this coast. Commanded by Captain Jean-Matthieu de Cérilly, The Taker was one of the last French naval resistances in the Indian Ocean. Cornered by two British vessels, it ended up deliberately running aground here, on this beach, to avoid capture.
