History & Heritage of Vanille Park

Visit Vanilla Nature Park is one of the treasures of the wild south of Mauritius. Opened in 1985, this zoological and botanical park covers some twenty hectares of lush vegetation, dominated by palm trees, giant bamboos, and tropical trees. A true haven of biodiversity, it offers visitors a unique immersion in Mauritian nature and its living heritage.

Its name comes from the ancient vanilla plantations that once occupied this fertile region. Even today, the scent of spices and aromatic plants recalls this agricultural history and the close bond between man and his environment.

Vanilla is also the guardian of an exceptional zoological heritage. It is home to one of the largest populations of Aldabra giant tortoises in the world, some of which are over 100 years old. The park thus plays a major role in the conservation of this emblematic species of the Indian Ocean. It also hosts Nile crocodiles, iguanas, monkeys, chameleons, tropical butterflies, and an impressive collection of exotic insects.

But the park's history isn't limited to wildlife. La Vanille is deeply rooted in Mauritian memory. Older generations would come here to discover rare animals, in a setting that combined education and wonder. Today, it remains a place of transmission, where families, schools, and travelers come to understand the island's natural and cultural richness.

Along the trails, you'll encounter spaces that tell the story of the country's history: traditional fishing, botanical knowledge, livestock farming, and the stories of the first naturalists to explore the Indian Ocean. Every corner reminds us that biodiversity is an integral part of Mauritian identity.

Far removed from modern, artificial parks, La Vanille maintains an authentic and friendly atmosphere. Here, guests can enjoy traditional Creole dishes, listen to local stories, and share a simple moment amidst a preserved natural setting.

The atmosphere is peaceful and warm: children laughing as they play with turtles, families gathering for a picnic, travelers marveling at the majesty of crocodiles. Finally, the view of the lush southern landscapes completes this experience, offering a timeless journey between memory, nature, and culture.
